The faze clan founder will be jetting back to the Unites Stated empty handed after losing his fight against rival King Kenny, and with it losing his entire purse.
The fight went the distance with the judges delivering a split decision victory to hometown fighter Kenny who was undoubtedly the better supported fighter in the arena on the night. With each step forward and each punch thrown by Kenny, the crowd would roar its support. Did this crowd support sway the judges?
Divisive judging in boxing is nothing new, it is however in the spotlight at the moment, especially considering some of the high profile decisions in professional boxing that have been dubbed as suspicious at the least. One example of this is the recent fight between Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall. Most pundits, experts and fans believe that Catterall did more than enough to deserve the decision on the night, yet Josh Taylor won by split decision. Judging decisions that go against the popular vote can put a stain on boxing and create a suspicion of match fixing. While this isn’t beyond the realms of possibility, it is also worth noting that there is more to scoring professional boxing than just punches thrown or landed.
Boxing is scored round by round. If a fighter wins 7 rounds, then becomes tired and reduces their punch output and loses the last 5 rounds, the opponent may well have more punches thrown and landed overall but didn’t win enough rounds to take the bout. There is also the debate of styles and more importantly the type of style and punches that a particular judge deems worth scoring. Some judges will prefer more aggressive fighters who are on the front foot for most of the fight, where others will give credit to passive fighters, counter punchers or fighters who pick their punches and deliver with accuracy.
Judging a boxing match is very subjective, it is open to interpretation, and this often causes disparity between judges, fans and pundits alike.
Upon receiving the victory in his bout against Temperr, Kenny said, "It feels great man, I put a lot of hard work into my training." He went on to thank his coach and brother Daley.
Kenny then took to social media to vent his frustrations with those who thought he was wrongfully awarded the win.
King Kenny's opinion that he was the rightful victor was not a popular one. Faze Temperr, along with the majority of fans, some boxing professionals and a huge array of fellow content creators were seemingly in agreement that the decision was "an embarrassment to boxing".
Faze Temperrr shared a string of posts on Twitter in which he explains his outlook on the decision.
“It feels great man, I put a lot of hard work into my training.”
one thing is for sure, when there is this much controversy over a fight, there will more than likely be a rematch. Will King Kenny and Faze Temperrr face off again in the ring? It would be fitting, and hopefully there will be a judging decision that matches the action and leaves fans unified in who won.
