The “Two-time, back-to-back Blockbuster Video Game World Champion” Dr Disrespect has brought attention to just how little the platform that he streams on supports him. He claims that him switching over from Twitch put them “on the map”. While I think most would agree that YouTube was already well and truly on the map, YouTube gaming has certainly grown in popularity since “The Doc” made the switch!
There are few names in the content creation world that can rival the celebrity and draw that Dr Disrespect has, so it isn’t without warrant that he is questioning the lack of support from his chosen streaming platform.
Since his still mysterious exit from twitch, there seems to have been a clear reluctance to acknowledge The Doc and his achievements within content creations. Most recently he was snubbed in the 2022 Streamer Awards, something he was not reluctant to draw attention to.
On March 17, Dr Disrespect tweeted out his thoughts and feelings about Youtube Gaming’s treatment of him, pointing out that they don’t follow, tweet about, or mention him. He asked his 2.3 million followers to “Seriously just stop and think about it for a second.” He summed it up by explaining that he and ‘The Champions Club’, “are on another level, baby.”
YouTube Gaming is enjoying a huge boost in popularity now, with some massive names in the industry choosing to adopt the platform as a home, but if they aren’t careful, they could alienate people who, like Dr Disrespect, are at least in part responsible for their growth.
Will we see a more two-sided relationship between The Doc and YouTube Gaming going forward? Hopefully any stress or tension between the two parties can be resolved and doesn’t end up in another situation on the level of Dr Disrespect’s Twitch fallout.
